ABOUT THE SHOW

In a new commission by DanceEast, award-winning Director and Choreographer Arthur Pita, in collaboration with HeadSpaceDance, presents a wickedly gruesome, darkly surreal double bill of dark dance.

Stepmother leads us into a menacing world where macabre folklore meets the grotesque. Fairy tales distort into nightmares as familiar characters from Snow White to Hansel and Gretel are pursued by a force of monstrous and abusive stepmothers.

Stepfather tells the grisly tale of a twisted family situation, inspired by the folk punk ‘Country Death Song’ from cult American band Violent Femmes. Spiralling into a hellish world of incest and murder, the search for redemption is played out beyond the grave.

Arthur Pita’s recent international sell-out successes include: The Metamorphosis at the Royal Opera House, Linbury Theatre which won the South Bank Award, National Dance Award and an Olivier Award nomination; Facada for Russian ballet stars Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev (London, New York, Moscow) and The Little Match Girl (Sadler’s Wells & national tour).

REVIEWS

  • ★★★★
'Horribly entertaining. A very dark treat indeed'

    THE OBSERVER

  • ★★★★
'A joyously twisted chamber of horrors… Pita’s macabre cabaret confirms the choreographer as one of his generation’s leading storytellers'

    THE GUARDIAN

  • ★★★★
'This double bill neatly underlines Pita’s knack for fashioning darkly humorous yet psychologically probing dance theatre. Gimlet-eyed grisliness is rarely this feelgood or so surprisingly poignant'

    THE TIMES

  • ★★★★
'A gloriously twisted imagination that brings laughter and icky disgust in this double bill'

    EVENING STANDARD

  • ★★★★
'Stepmother/Stepfather celebrates our primal curiosity in violence, sexuality, and death creating an unnerving double-bill that will no doubt disturb as many audience members as it delights… This is an unforgiving theatrical experience – and essential viewing for anyone interested dance.'

    THE INDEPENDENT

  • ★★★★
'The dark, twisted inventiveness of Arthur Pita runs riot across this double-bill of bad parenting, murder, suicide, incest and a little light cannibalism'

    DANCETABS

  • ★★★★
'A joyously twisted chamber of horrors… Pita and his excellent cast also find moments of tender insight, and it’s through this singular and surprising balance of tone that Pita has established himself as one of his generation’s leading storytellers.'

    The Guardian

  • ★★★★
'Arthur Pita is one of today's most original choreographic voices. He's an accomplished fashioner of dances, but it's his imaginative storytelling that sets him apart from his contemporaries'

    THE OBSERVER

  • ★★★★
'Pita's dance works have something of the surreal glamour, unsettling psychology and wired humour of a Lynch movie'

    THE GUARDIAN
